Years Working Towards Language Revitalization: 15

Lawrence Michel is a fluent Secwepemc speaker who lives on the Adams Lake Reserve. He is a gentle, patient language teacher.

He currently teaches language to 4 and 5-year-old children at Chief Atahm School and he teaches traditional skills to adults on the weekend.

He has taught language for 15 years, using his traditional knowledge and his carpentry experience. His students have ranged from nursery to elementary and high school age.

Each summer, Lawrence revisits the ancestral home of the Adams Lake Secwepemc and records traditional place names and stories which are used for language curriculum development and then archived for future generations. This is a highlight of my year.

Lawrence is a storyteller. He continues to share traditional and community stories in Secwepemctsin A in our community and at our annual Secwepemc Gathering. Lawrence shows that anything worth learning, can be learned through a story in our language, Secwepemctsin.

I am honoured to nominate Lawrence Michel as a Language Champion.
