Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Penticton Indian Band in collaboration with Osoyoos Indian Band, Westbank First Nation, Okanagan Indian Band, Okanagan Nation Alliance and partner organizations, has implemented the Syilx Language House Association, funded jointly by partner organizations and ALI FPCC grant 2015-16, to operate an Nsyilxcn language house learning and Elder Documentation project (Year 1). The Language House opened in September 2015 and will run a four year intensive program to create new speakers and document Elders.
Challenges:
Ongoing effects of colonization and post-residential school effect, coupled with a previous tendency to rely on school programs, place the burden of teaching on Elders, and to rely on institutions to revitalize and preserve our languages, and confusion between revitalization (creating new speakers) and documentation.
