Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Culture Camp language classes, previous Aboriginal Language Initiative support, ongoing Transcription work by junior Elder Alice Carlick, TRTFN Culture Centre and master carver and mentor Wayne Carlick, access to two inspired and skilled active Tlingit language learners and teachers (Louise Mason and Keduka Jack), after-school programs for language learners. Overall, the TRTFN community is comparatively rich with cultural knowledge and is hungry in many ways for more language especially.
Challenges:
Remote location, lack of services, limited programming, small school age population, very few Tlingit Language Speakers, funding barriers, participation barriers, strained family and community relationships, loss of language and culture due to Indian Residential Schools.
