Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Opening in Sept 2015, the Language house is offering a four year intensive program to create new speakers and to document and record Elder stories. The Language House is jointly funded by the Penticton Indian Band, Westbank First Nation, Okanagan Indian Band, Okanagan Nation Alliance, and Osoyoos Indian Band as well as the ALI FPCC grant.
Challenges:
The limited access to fluent speaking Elders to document and learn from has been an issue. The ongoing effects of colonization and post-residential school effect, coupled with a previous tendency to rely on school programs, place the burden of teaching on Elders, and to rely on institutions to revitalize and preserve our languages, and confusion between revitalization (creating new speakers) and documentation.
