Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Penticton Indian Band in collaboration with Osoyoos Indian Band, Westbank First Nation, Okanagan Indian Band, Okanagan Nation Alliance and partner organizations, has implemented the Syilx Language House Association, funded jointly by partner organizations, Simon Fraser University, and ALI FPCC grants, to operate the Syilx Language House 2,000 hour program for adult learners. The Language House opened in September 2015 and will run a four year intensive program to create new speakers and document Elders. The Language House is producing one book with CD of Elder recordings each year of operation and sharing freely with community and on their website www.thelanguagehouse.ca.
Challenges:
Ongoing effects of colonization and post- residential school effect, coupled with a previous tendency to rely on school programs, place the burden of teaching on Elders, and to rely on institutions to revitalize and preserve our languages, and confusion between revitalization (training new speakers through intensive programs) and documentation.
