Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Language recordings of the elders have been recorded to be used to create language learning resources. The recordings build on the funded BCLI project resulting in the book entitled Tla-o-qui-aht Speaks as it is told by kaamath, Levi Martin; and home learning resources being created by language learning families within the communities. A formal facility for language learning was once a challenge, however, our Tyhistanis/Esowista communities will soon benefit from a facility that will provide a gathering space for language learning. The 3rd community of Tlaoquiaht, Opitsaht, has a facility for language, as well. There are approximately 20 fluent speakers, 2 of our members have taken a master-apprentice program with a Tlaoquiaht Elder, and children are learning language in the community preschool, elementary, and high school.
Challenges:
There is a lack of certified linguistic teachers able to teach the language. More resource material is required to be developed for providing instructional/visual teaching aids, etc.
