Opportunities and Challenges
Tsilhqot'in speaking band members finally have their Language and Culture identified, supported and establishing a Tsilhqot'in Language Program through FPCC support of their initiatives. The opportunity of planning our language program we can now reflect how to address the current demographics, build resources, identify projects and infrastructure. The outcome of the information and data will help us to assist and overcome any barriers or challenges that suppressed Tsilhqot'in families from having access to their language and culture within their own traditional territory. This is an opportunity and new beginning to revive our language, culture and connect with the land.
The main challenge was our Tsilhqot'in families did not have a certified Tsilhqot'in Language person. Secondly, there is no Tsilhqot'in language and culture program established. There has been no language or community needs assessments done on the Tsilhqot'in Language in Ulkatcho. The challenges would be to go through and identify who, what, where, when and how the community members would like to their Tsilhqot'in Language Program be in Ulkatcho.
