Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
The Syilx Language House opened in September 2015 and will run a four year intensive immersion program with the objectives to create new speakers and document Elders. The Syilx Language House produces one book with associated audio in the form of a CD of Elder recordings each operational year and share freely with the community. These recordings can be found on their website: www.thelanguagehouse.ca.
Challenges:
Ongoing effects of colonization and post- residential school effect, coupled with a previous tendency to rely on school programs, place the burden of teaching on Elders, and to rely on institutions to revitalize and preserve our languages, and confusion between revitalization (training new speakers through intensive programs) and documentation.
