Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
We have recently created a small publishing organization at Seabird, with the aim to promote rare and endangered Indigenous languages. We have created an engaging graphic novel called "Nighthawk and Little Elk", which reads like a fairy tale, but really is about The Sixties Scoop. It has been translated into 7 Indigenous languages so far. Many local artists and band members have collaborated on the project. Future projects include more tales and multilingual interactive language applications. Further information: eelonqa@intrepidnarration on Facebook and we can also send you a copy of the novel.
Challenges:
Challenge: Finding credible translators, editors, vetting language elders. For Halq'emeylem for example, there is only one fluent first language speaker left, and she is quite elderly... Challenge: Finding financial resources for our project. We have invested personal funds to the amount of $50,000 as we believe this project will serve to engage the Indigenous readers. Challenge: We currently give the books away to local schools and libraries or sell them for a nominal fee to keep it accessible. UBC and a few local school districts have bought sets, and we have donated copies to the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, the University of Manitoba, and Xwixwa Library at UBC.
