Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
This funding will enable work done in the 1980's to salvage the Oowekyala language to be digitalized and made available to a younger generation. Putting language learning materials into digital and video formats will reach a younger generation who are used to acessing information this way.
Challenges:
There are only 2 fluent speakers of Oowekyala left. One lives in the village of the Wuikinuxv in Rivers Inlet and one in Port Hardy. The language is in danger of dying out. There are appproximately 11 semi- fluent speakers both on and off reserve. The goal of this project is to increase the opportunities for Wuikinuxv people to learn Oowekyala by creating language learning materials that are digital and visual. The language learning materials created in the 1980 s will be turned into video and digital files that can be accessed by bolth on-reservand off-reserve populations.
