Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
• A resurgence of interest in the pursuit of language & culture in the 25 to 40 year olds as demonstrated by the self-formation and growth of a community song & culture group • Well attended Tseshaht language classes at the local college • On-going language, song & dance classes at Ha-Ho-Payuk Elementary School • A strong Language & Culture Committee within the Tseshaht FN governing bodly
Challenges:
• The language and phonetics are not easy and can be intimidating to a new learner particularly when not used on a daily basis • Not everyone wants to go to school to learn their language (for many the school experiences were very negative) so we need to foster more casual learning environments • The community is in growth (both population & infrastructure) so not as cohesive as it once was – getting together listening to elders stories and songs (in the language)gets more difficult
