Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
To research and interview chiefs, matriarchs, and respected elders in the community on Nisga'a language and culture - origin stories and stories pertaining to Wilps and all aspects of Nisga'a livelihood - to preserve and develop needed resources to increase fluency within the Nisga'a Village of Gitwinksihlkw. Once the interviews are completed, the opportunities will be explored in terms of how the information will be stored and developed including publishing, for example.
Challenges:
There are significant challenges with an aging population of losing our language and culture. The fluency of Nisga'a people is declining, and we need to do whatever we can to increase fluency in Nisga'a language and culture. Currently, we've identified 17/38 (44%) fluent language speakers in the Nisga'a Village of Gitwinksihlkw. Many of these fluent speakers are 65 and older, and we're extremely worried about the loss of both language and culture if we don't initiate a project to preserve and retain knowledge.
