Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Opportunities: Paawats, formal presence in the Bamfield Community School – some children only know the Huu-ay-aht word for some things (i.e. Crow, bear), one dedicated language learner who has aspirations to gain formal teaching credentials will hopefully encourage others to follow, supportive leadership including hereditary leaders (identified as a priority in strategic plan), Huu-ay-aht has been building language programming since 2007 and has formalized communication streams to disseminate language learning resources to citizenship (website, mail, Facebook, etc.), several completed projects including language flashcards, Nuu-chah-nulth phrase book, and vignettes, promotes positive self-identity in all citizens.
Challenges:
Challenges: very few healthy fluent speakers, minimal resources/language learning tools, insufficient funding, few adults interested in becoming language experts, remote community, citizen base is spread over large geographical area, many ancestral words have been lost, there are not words for 2018 technology, ideas, and concepts.
