Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
The TFN community is very eager to learn Hun'qum'inum; currently we are providing both a Youth Hun'qum'inum and a Family Hun'qum'inum class once per week. We have a linguist from SFU teaching Hun'qum'inum to our staff members, and we have a TFN speaker teaching the community classes. The classes are very well attended by community members and youth. We will be starting a language nest program in our Early Childhood Education program in the fall. We have strong administrative capacity to deliver language projects. TFN Members living off-TFN Lands are interested in learning the language and could have that opportunity with a FirstVoices Archive and Dictionary App.
Challenges:
Insufficient instructional resources and resource accessibility, lack of Hun'qum'inum speakers (there is only one in our community). There are challenges in teaching Hun'qum'inum to TFN Members who do not live in the lower mainland. We currently lack the resources to develop a database in which to store our language resources and we do not currently have the organizational knowledge to effectively use such a database.
