Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Our opportunities have always been a strong willingness to learn and engage with cultural practices. While 'culture' is sometimes viewed separate from 'language', there is a very strong motivation among community members to partake in cultural activities. Whenever anything is going on in our traditional Bighouse, the community comes out in full. Another opportunity is our elders' ability to contribute their time and knowledge. All of our fluent speakers are well into their 70s and yet they are all willing to plan and attend any and all language/culture community activities. Another opportunity is also our extreme isolation. Our community would be an ideal setting for language retreats or immersion sessions, far away from the outside world and non-native influences.
Challenges:
Challenges to implementing language and cultural projects are definitely a lack of financial resources, lack of qualified resource people (both fluent speakers and program leaders), lack of community motivation (motivation is high, however, with lack of funds, programs and qualified leaders, motivation of the community dwindles and attendance decreases eventually).
