Community(-ies) this project will be serving:
Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
There is a strong desire within the community to record the elders/the language, and to be able to participate in language classes. The recently funded BCLI project resulting in the book entitled Tla-o-qui-aht Speaks as it is told by kaamath, Levi Martin, has created a momentum to continue forward in establishing language projects/programs. Lastly, both a challenge and an opportunity, there are approximately 20 fluent speakers.
Challenges:
Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations is comprised of 3 separate communities, and due to the geopraphical location and remoteness, creates transportation difficulties for community members, language instruction. Despite the preschool, there is also no formal facility or classroom space established for instructional activities. There is a lack of certified linguistic teachers able to teach the language and a lack of resource material to provide instructional/visual teaching aids, etc.
