Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
Language instruction/activities are done for school age children, grades Pre-4 to 12 through Chalo School. The FNFN Culture Revitalization department offers opportunities for the Elders to pass on their language during community events. There is an online Language program available for Chalo School with participating students from ages Pre-3 & 4, and grades K-12. Language Bingo is offered to community members with an active participating group of 50 people who range in ages newborns to Elders. Attendance during Elder's Lunches and Elder's Socials range from 35-80 people. There are other language learning opportunities for all community members during major events such as Annual Celebration, Treaty Days, Trappers Rendezvous, community picnics and Seasonal activities such as Healthy Heart Pizza making, berry picking, campfire gatherings. FNFN Culture department also offers translation services on a needs basis
Challenges:
There are many challenges that Fort Nelson First Nation faces -not enough Dené K'e speakers. The ones who do speak the language are Elders. Lack of existing programs for language instruction. The members who do speak the language are not willing to take on the task of teaching the Language.
