Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
NBH is expanding the direct programming we offer to our youth in care. Language is one of the highest priorities that we want to offer to our kids. Culture camp is an opportunity to provide a foundation to linguistic knowledge, but continuing their training on a longer term basis through our Young Warriors program offers the opportunity for these kids to increase their skills and their ability to take pride in their Aboriginal culture and history. Each of our communities has an Aboriginal school that provides children and youth living in community the opportunity to learn their language through specific language classes.
Challenges:
Each of our guiding communities, Tl’azt’en and Nak’azdli, have significant low levels of completion of education. The drug and alcohol concerns within each community impacts people’s commitment to attending language projects. The majority of the children that we care for are in homes away from their home communities and are unable to participate in in-community programming that is offered.
