Opportunities and Challenges
Opportunities:
The Society has been hosting regular Nlaka'pamuxcin lunch session with elders and community members from the Lytton Area. The sessions include traditional lunch. Nlaka'pamuxcin language teacher Charon Spinks provides instruction in Nlaka'pamuxcin to community members with the assistance of fluent Nlaka'pamuxcin speakers Jean Florence, Dakie Adams and Judy Hanna. The Society has been focusing on two areas: Nlaka'pamuxcin for food and cedar-root basket making and uses. The Society has been meeting in the kitchen classroom of the Stein Valley Nlaka'pamux School (the school is offering immersion from k-4) and also used the Rosie Skuki Centre. The sessions are open to any community member wishing to learn Nlaka'pamuxcin. The Society will be partnering with Dr. Candace Galla, Department of Education, Endangered Languages. to have her class assist in developing resource materials in respect to foods and basket-making.
Challenges:
The challenges of advancing the Nlaka'pamuxcin language work of the Society include: lack of secure funding, need for additional language resources to foster conversation in the language, the lack of a paid coordinator, and the lack of technology knowledge that may foster additional learning opportunities.
