Map of B.C.
Until the area became a provincial park in 1961, Bowron Lake was actively used by eastern Dakelh People during their seasonal rounds. Precontact trails through the area connected the Bowron Lake area to the Fraser River at Quesnel, and across the Rocky Mountains via the Goat River. Oral histories and written evidence from early fur traders place Dakelh People at Bowron Lake (sometimes called Bear Lake) in the summertime for fishing and harvesting. Archaeologists have identified several small habitation sites around the lake.
